The Bellwether’s future …

May 20, 2008 by

Wow! Renne’s discussion on branding and marketing was terrific. Everyone was scribbling notes, myself included. I won’t be at the June meeting due to a big spinning conference, so I thought I might put some notes on our blog to encourage everyone on their follow-up work, by example.

The first thing I was scribbling was a list of materials I need to have on hand as The Bellwether converts slowly (years, not months!) from mainly-selling to mainly-teaching. *Lots* of spindles of many sorts and weights … some of them I already have, some I need to stock and keep for classes, rather than sell. So that was interesting. In the process of doing that, I realized I had a great set of classes for a spinner’s weekend … oo laa laa … so there’s another activity I can plan for and organize.

After our meeting and emailing Melissa and Lisa and calling Renne to track down my forgotten bobbin (it’s home again — thanks everyone!), I went over my margin scribbles and made a list of activities for myself.

  • segue the website (thebellwether.biz) and blog (askthebellwether.blogspot.com) colors to be a common mauve/purple from the ice-blue and pink they are now. I’ve been told the blue looks cold, and both are from templates, so it would be nice to personalize them a bit. So far my colors have not been targetted, just the black-white-and-yellow of my logo. But I think the mauve would be a nice addition, and it would connect the webstore and blog a bit more strongly.
  • add the OPT tag to byourhands.etsy.com items (oops — that was an oversight on my part).
  • work on a teacher’s byline; my working start is, A Class and A Laugh … it will be interesting to see what this mutates into. I didn’t pipe up, but The Bellwether’s tag started as “Fine Fiber Art Supplies from the Pacific Northwest”, before the current rhyme, “Spindles Galore, Fine Fibers and More!”
  • Add an Ask A Question submission box on the blog so that visitors can submit them directly as questions. I am under the impression (though I don’t track stats) that the blog is developing a good following, but I’d love for it to be more fed by reader’s questions than by the fertile imaginings of my mind, much as it appears to be on track with their own interests.
  • Think more on who my direct competition is. This has shifted from where I knew it was a few years ago, so it’s worth a review and re-evaluation. As Renne pointed out, my teaching is one of the unique things of my vendor-ship, so while I don’t make the products I sell, I do have something special to offer my customers.

The note that stuck with me enough to make it onto my list from the handout was, develop a strong and nimble brand. I’m a huge fan of Seth Godin‘s books and quick-to-read blog, and he too is one of these people that believes in nimble-ness as a path to success.

So, how far along are you? Made your list of actions yet? No pressure, really! If I hadn’t done my list right away, I wouldn’t have started, just let them rattle around in my head for a spare moment. Now, don’t wait around for an update, as I have orders to pack and shows to prepare for …
